How does a treatment with decoctions work?

The diagnosis and the resulting therapy in Chinese Medicine consist of the following information: anamnesis, tong and pulse diagnosis.

The symptoms are considered as „leaves” which in their entity lead the therapist during the anamnesis (investigation of the pre-history of the disease) to the “root” of the problem.

The “root” or underlying blockade on the “Qi or blood level” is recognised as the “pattern” that is to be treated and the therapist tries to compile a mixture of herbs according to the “key-lock principle” which encourage the body to delete the blockade by itself.

In the process, the organism is considered as entity (holistic medicine), as unity of body, mind and soul: ALL these levels of the organism are treated simultaneously.

The decoction (boiling of pharmaceutical herbs) does not heal the diseased organism but encourages the self-adjustment of the “confused“ organism. With the regular intake of the medicine the body gets a kind of “coaching lesson” – regular impulses that are to enable it to use its own adjustment abilities.

These formulations made of “natural products” (roots, leaves, branches or barks of Chinese medical plants) do not suppress the “symptoms” but interfere with the disordered regulatory system of the organism. The disease pattern is not “manipulated away” or suppressed but the natural “healing system”, the so-called immune system, is encouraged and requested to fulfil its actual task.

Therefore, no side effects or unpleasant outcomes will arise if the decoctions are properly applied.
